Surfshark vs NordVPN (2026): Which Should You Get?

You've narrowed it to these two, and you want the tiebreaker. One thing first, because most comparisons skip it: Surfshark and NordVPN have the same parent company. Nord Security and Surfshark merged in 2022 under a Netherlands holding company. They still run separate apps, separate server networks and separate roadmaps, and the differences between them are real. But any comparison that doesn't tell you they're siblings isn't being straight with you.
Second thing: the advertised price is not the price. All the big VPNs sell cheap intro terms that renew at two to three times the rate, and there are live US lawsuits about exactly this practice. So this comparison shows renewal costs next to intro costs, which most don't.
The short version
Get Surfshark if you're covering a household. Unlimited simultaneous devices, the lowest intro price here (£2.15/month on the 2-year term against Nord's £3.11), and about £26 less over the first two years. It does the important things well: passes BBC iPlayer, audited by Deloitte, fast enough that you won't notice.
Get NordVPN if you want the strongest all-rounder and will pay a couple of pounds a month more for it. It wins the independent speed tests consistently, has been through six Deloitte no-logs audits (the most of any major VPN), runs a bigger network, and its Threat Protection Pro blocked more ads and trackers than Surfshark's CleanWeb in independent testing.

The real cost, including the bit the ads skip
Intro terms (verified August 2026, both with 30-day money-back guarantees): Surfshark's 2-year Starter works out at £2.15/month, billed £58 up front for 27 months. NordVPN's 2-year Basic is £3.11/month, billed £83.92 for 27 months. Paying monthly costs far more on both (£11.28 and £13.31 respectively).
The part that matters more: what happens at renewal. Surfshark renews at its list rate of roughly £60-65 a year for the basic tier. NordVPN renews near its 1-year plan rate. Both are two to three times the intro monthly-equivalent, and this practice is the subject of ongoing US class actions against Surfshark and others over how clearly auto-renewal is disclosed. Our advice is boring and effective: put a calendar reminder a month before your term ends, then either haggle (both send discount offers to leavers) or switch. Treat every VPN subscription as a 2-year purchase, not a relationship.
What the testing says
- Speed: NordVPN wins the 2026 independent tests consistently: 81% speed retention and averages above 750 Mbps in Cybernews testing, with vpnMentor finding it ahead in every location tested. Surfshark holds 77% retention. Honest context: on a typical UK broadband line under 500 Mbps, you will not feel the difference; the gap only matters on very fast connections or long-distance servers.
- BBC iPlayer abroad: detection tightened sharply in 2026 and most VPNs now fail. Independent testing found only three that still work reliably, and both of these are on the list (Proton VPN is the third). Nord is slightly more consistent thanks to 400+ UK servers against Surfshark's 200+. Both unblock the major Netflix regions, Prime Video and Disney+.
- Privacy and audits: both publish Deloitte no-logs audits. NordVPN completed its sixth in late 2025, the strongest audit cadence of any major VPN; Surfshark its second in mid 2025. One incident worth knowing: in January 2026 a forum post claimed a NordVPN breach; Nord's response was that the data came from an isolated third-party test platform with dummy credentials and no customer data, and no independent evidence of customer impact has emerged. We mention it because you might find it when searching; the audit record is the stronger signal.
- Blocking: NordVPN's Threat Protection Pro blocked 72% of ads in Security.org's testing, works even when the VPN is disconnected, and carries AV-TEST certification. Surfshark's CleanWeb blocked 57% and mostly needs the VPN active. If built-in blocking matters to you, Nord's is the stronger tool.
- Where Surfshark wins on features: unlimited devices (Nord caps at 10), MultiHop routes you can build yourself (Nord's Double VPN uses preset pairs only), and Alternative ID, which generates a disposable identity and email for sign-ups.
Worth considering too: ExpressVPN
The traditional "premium option" now has the cheapest intro price of the three (2-year Basic at £1.99/month) and the harshest renewals (£69.95 to £149.95 a year depending on tier). It caps devices at 10 to 14, and its distinct advantage is the Aircove router, which puts every device in your home behind the VPN without per-device setup. Pick it for the router-first setup or its interface polish; go in with your eyes open about year three.
UK context
- Using a VPN is legal in the UK. The government confirmed in late 2025 that it will not ban or age-gate VPNs; the Online Safety Act places duties on platforms, not on VPN users. What you do through a VPN is subject to the same laws as without one.
